New York OB/GYN Associates™ is committed to making our patients feel relaxed and comfortable so they are free to express their concerns, feelings, and fears. You can talk to us about anything regarding matters of women’s health and sexuality. Individual needs are addressed with sensitivity, compassion, and confidentiality. All discussions, and treatments are confidentially bound by the sacred doctor-patient relationship. When having an abortion many women feel conflicted about their decision. They may feel alone or frightened. However what most women don’t realize is that abortion is much more “ordinary” than we tend to experience. Most women experience abortion first-hand at least once in their lives. We are in a time when women are having sex, and birth control is not perfect. Sex is a time when we may sometimes get carried away. We may make mistakes. Life’s situations and choices are rarely ideal.
We feel it is important for you to be able to talk about your feelings and concerns.
While we understand that counseling is not required, we still make ourselves available
if you want to talk. We promote individually scheduled visits so that waiting time is limited
and private. Therefore, patients have the opportunity to ask us questions and talk through
their feelings if they wish to do so.
Abortion counseling focuses on the decision-making process, the options for continuing the pregnancy, medical issues of the pregnancy, information regarding the pregnancy itself, information and options for the abortion procedure, and, finally, information regarding birth control decisions
. The risks and benefits of both medical/RU-486
and non-surgical abortions are also reviewed. Our board certified staff is well educated on all the different methods of abortion care and we are here to answer any and all of the questions you may have.
The counseling process is aimed primarily at the woman herself but may also include other people she chooses to be involved. Studies indicate that men are involved in more than 40% of the decisions, but only scant research has been performed on male involvement in the process. Some women can reach a decision quickly. Others take longer to decide. The counseling process may provide referrals if you need ongoing support. You should not feel pressured to make a decision. Take time to consider your options.
If you chose to have counseling, you may be asked questions designed to encourage meaningful discussion of the issues as they pertain to you. You will have many emotions. Women's satisfaction with the abortion care they receive correlates with the quality of education and counseling that they receive. Studies have shown that women who engage in counseling have a more positive outlook on abortion and the decisions they make.
It is important to ask any questions you may have and be open about the emotions you feel during counseling. The goal of abortion counseling is to provide both information and support that women need to complete all aspects of the procedure.
