Questions Aspiration Procedure Abortion Pill
How does this method work? A Board Certified OB/GYN inserts a thin tube into your uterus, through the cervix. A mild pressure is applied with a hand-held manual aspiration device. The contents of the uterus will then be removed. The first pill blocks pregnancy hormones from acting on your uterus. This stops the pregnancy from developing. The second set of pills causes the cervix to dilate and the uterus to contract, so that the pregnancy is terminated.
How far along in the pregnancy can I be? Up to 13.5 weeks from your last menstrual period. Up to 9 weeks from your last menstrual period.
How long does it take? One visit to our offices. The procedure takes 2-5 minutes. After the procedure a repeat ultrasound will confirm the termination of the pregnancy. A follow up visit is scheduled only as needed or per patient preference. Usually 2 visits to our office. You have the option of taking the first pill in the office or in the privacy of your own home. You then take the second set of pills at home. This causes an early miscarriage, usually within hours of taking the second pills, but sometimes it can take longer. You then come back to our offices for a follow up visit one week later to confirm the termination of pregnancy by a repeat ultrasound
Is the procedure painful? Most women have mild pain. Women experience mild to moderate cramps that usually last 5-6 minutes. You don’t need to be put to sleep, although you have the option if you wish to be sedated.
Women usually have mild to moderate cramps for several hours. We will prescribe pain medication to ease the pain, which you can take as needed.
Will I have to miss work or school? Women who undergo the Aspiration Procedure do not need to miss work/school. They can resume to normal activity after the procedure is over You do not have to miss work. You can plan to take the second set of pills, which cause a miscarriage, at a time where it does not interfere with work/school.
Will I bleed a lot? Women usually experience light bleeding from 1-7 days off and on. Women usually experience heavier bleeding than their periods during the miscarriage. As soon as the miscarriage is over the bleeding experienced is like a period and gradually gets lighter as time progresses. Bleeding usually lasts for several days and can last up to two weeks.
What happens if the procedure doesn’t work? At New York OB/GYN AssociatesTM we guarantee the Abortion Procedure. We perform a sonogram to make sure that the abortion is completed before you leave the office. If the abortion is not successful we will redo the procedure at no additional cost. If the Abortion Pill fails, you can try the pill a second time, or have an Aspiration Procedure at our private office for no additional fee.
Is it safe? It is very safe. A Board Certified OG/GYN will inform you about all the details. Also an important fact to note is that women have no trouble getting pregnant in the future after an Aspiration Procedure. The Abortion Pill is very safe and complications are extremely rare. Women have no trouble getting pregnant in the future.
Which method is better? Both the Aspiration Procedure and the Abortion Pill are equally safe and effective. It’s more a matter of your own preference. Some women choose the Aspiration Procedure because they want to terminate the pregnancy that day. Other women choose the Abortion Pill because they can take it in the privacy of their own home. Women are usually happy with the decision they make. We will walk you through both procedure and you can make an informed decision once you have had a chance to speak with your doctor.
How soon can I start birth control? Most birth control can be started the day of your procedure, but we advise you take them one week later after your follow up visit. You can set up an additional visit for a diaphragm, cervical cap, or IUD if interested in these methods of birth control.
How soon can I resume to sexual activity? We recommend that you wait a day after the procedure before engaging in sexual activity or using a tampon. You should wait three days after taking the second set of pills before engaging in sexual activity or using a tampon.
Can my partner/mother/friend be with me during my abortion? We allow your loved ones to be with you throughout your entire visit. We understand the importance of having the support of family and friends and welcome them to be with you while the procedure takes place if you choose to have them with you. If you choose to have your companion(s) wait in the waiting area they will be kept informed of your progress throughout your visit, and extra care will be taken to visit with partners, family, or friends who are nervous or anxious about you.
