Cosmetic Vaginal Surgery
At New York OB/GYN Associates™ all of our doctors are board certified with extensive experience administering Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty. Our doctors are award winning master surgeons who are renowned in the field of gynecology and reconstructive vaginal surgery. Their unprecedented and unsurpassed experience in vaginal cosmetic and rejuvenation surgery has resulted in some of the latest surgical advancements in their field.
Cosmetic labiaplasty is a labia reduction and beautification surgery. It involves surgically reducing and/or reshaping the female external genital structures. Labiaplasty is a gynecological reconstructive procedure for altering the labia minora and the labia majora, these are the paired tissue structures bounding the vestibule of the vagina. The labia majora are the large outer lips. The labia minora are the small inner lips that are within the labia majora; however, in some women, the minora lips are short and thin and hidden by the labia majora; and in others, the labia minora are longer, thicker, and wider, and extend beyond the labia majora. Lately, many women are requesting the labiaplasty procedure.
Reasons why women seek to have labiaplasty include:
- They want to alleviate discomfort caused by large and/or thick labia, which often interfere with biking, working out, wearing tight fitting clothes.
- Many women want to enhance or improve appearance of an asymmetrical or misshapen labia.
Feeling good about how one looks often builds self-confidence and self-esteem. At New York OB/GYN Associates™ a board certified OB/GYN will meet with you to go over all the aspects of the surgery. During your labiaplasty consultation, you can discuss what problems you are experiencing . Your board certified OB/GYN will then check to make sure you don’t have any other issues such as trouble urinating or general pain in the pelvic area. The procedure itself is simple , your board certified OB/GYN will use a scalpel to remove excess tissue of the labia minora. The labia majora can be reduced with either surgery or liposuction if needed as well. Labiaplasty takes about one hour to complete. No overnight stay is required but you will need someone to care for you after the procedure. There is some discomfort and pain after the procedure, your Board Certified OB/GYN will prescribe pain medication to minimize any pain after the procedure. Medication and rest after the procedure will keep you comfortable after your labiaplasty. After the procedure you will be swollen and you will be required to wear supportive undergarments.
The ideal candidate is one who:
- Experiences impairment in normal activities due to enlarged labia
- Has sexual dysfunction or pain from labia
- Would like to improve the appearance of the labia
Vaginoplasty is the rejuvenation of the vagina; it involves “tightening” and rebuilding of the vaginal muscles and the perineum. Vagina rejuvenation tightens the inside of the vaginal canal and the opening of the vagina in order to improve or enhance sexual function. Childbirth, aging, and genetic factors often cause the vaginal muscles to loosen, tear, and weaken. The diameter of the vagina gets bigger and there is sometimes a loss of feeling and pleasure. In many women this results in less friction, less sensation, the feeling of being “too loose” and difficulty reaching orgasm with intercourse.
Vaginoplasty returns the vagina to a “pre-pregnancy” state and recreates sexual excitement and pleasure for the woman. It will effectively enhance tightness of the vaginal walls and vaginal opening by decreasing the vaginal diameter and surgically repairing the damage caused by vaginal childbirth. It is important to note that the surgical technique required for each individual patient varies depending upon the amount and type of vaginal relaxation found.
Following vaginoplasty you should expect some slight bleeding for the first 24 hours and to feel sore and swollen for several days. Bed rest is advisable post-surgery as you will not be able to walk comfortably for a few days. Depending on the extent of surgery you can expect to be off work for 7 - 10 days. Full healing takes approximately 6 weeks.
