Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion with Dilation and Curettage (D&C) or Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) ARE NOT the best early abortion options, and thus ARE NOT performed at New York OB/GYN Associates™. Surgical abortions are overly invasive, use electrical suction, and may cause scarring of the uterus. According to the World Health Organization the Aspiration Abortion Procedure and the Abortion Pill/RU-486 are the safest early abortion methods, and as such are the methods offered at our private practice. These methods are non-invasive, and they are non-surgical methods that are gentle to uterine wall. Furthermore, the Aspiration Procedure and the Abortion Pill/RU-486 do not involve the major health risks associated with surgical abortions. The Aspiration Procedure uses a handheld device to apply a gentle suction to naturally release pregnancy tissue. The Abortion Pill/RU-486 blocks pregnancy hormones, resulting in a natural early miscarriage, much like a heavy period.

Surgical Abortion versus Non-surgical Abortion

After a surgical abortion, you are taken to a recovery room, and it can take up to several hours to feel normal again. When compared to the Aspiration Abortion and the Abortion Pill/RU-486 the recovery time is significantly longer. After an Aspiration Procedure you may resume normal activity immediately after the procedure. After the Abortion Pill/RU-486 you will feel back to normal a couple of hours after the miscarriage occurs. The Aspiration Abortion procedure and the Abortion Pill/RU-486 are the Safest Abortion Methods because they do not involve scraping, and electric suction. The Aspiration Procedure and the Abortion Pill/RU-486 are completed at our private medical examination room, or in the case of the Abortion Pill/RU-486 in the privacy of one's home. A surgical abortion is most commonly used to end pregnancies in abortion clinics, abortion centers, and hospitals, where doctor may not have the expertise in the gentler non-surgical aspiration procedure. New York OB/GYN Associates™ is recognized as one of the nation's leading private practice abortion providers with over 30 years of experience in abortion care. All of our physicians are board-certified obstetrician/gynecologists with specialized training in abortion care and they are recognized across the country as leading experts. Unlike many doctors in abortion clinics, they have specialized training in abortion care using the gentler Aspiration Procedure.

Procedure A soft plastic tube is inserted into the natural opening of the cervix. A thin cannula is inserted. Gentle pressure is applied with a handheld device. The pregnancy lining is expelled into the syringe. Metal dilators stretch the opening of the cervix. A cannula is inserted. A tube connects the cannula to an electric vacuum machine and suctioning is applied. The uterus is then scraped with a sharp instrument, or "curette."
Side effects Rare Can cause uterine scarring, Asherman Syndrome and future infertility.
