Early Abortions

At New York OB/GYN Associates™ we specialize in private early abortion care. Our Board Certified OB/GYNs have extensive training and over 30 years of experience providing the most comprehensive and safest abortion care. Early abortions are abortions within 13.5 weeks from your last menstrual period (LMP). If you are unsure of how far into pregnancy you are you can get a rough estimate by using our pregnancy calculator on the Pregnancy Timing page. If you are within 13.5 weeks of pregnancy you have excellent options to choose from for an early abortion. At New York OB/GYN Associates™ we offer two non-surgical early abortion options. These options include the Aspiration Procedure and the Abortion Pill/RU-486. Both Aspiration Abortion and the Abortion Pill/RU-486 are safe and natural methods to end a pregnancy. They end pregnancy far before it develops. Unlike surgical abortions, there is no scrapping, no scarring, and no significant discomfort. By choosing these non-surgical methods offered at New York OB/GYN Associates™ you also avoid the high complication rates associates with surgical abortions, which are typically performed at abortion centers and clinics.

Early Abortion Options

Aspiration Abortion Procedure

At New York OB/GYN Associates™ a Board Certified OB/GYN will perform the Aspiration Procedure. All of our Board Certified Physicians are specialized in abortion care and they have many years of experience administering the Aspiration Procedure. The process is safe and gentle. Using a handheld instrument the doctor safely removes pregnancy tissue by applying a safe amount of pressure, which removes tissue from the lining of the wall of the uterus. The Aspiration Procedure is conducted in our state of the art medical examination room and is much like a regular gynecological check up. The whole process only takes 2-5 minutes and recovery is immediate. Women tend to prefer the Aspiration Procedure because it is safer, gentler, and simpler than a surgical dilation and curettage (D&C) or the dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedure. New York OB/GYN Associates™ uses the newest state of the art Pro-Vac Aspiration System. With this system there is no scrapping, no scarring, no heavy suction and no loud noises. The entire procedure takes place in one visit and there is very minor cramping and less bleeding than a regular period. The procedure when performed at New York OB/GYN Associates™ is typically not painful. We realize that pain is very subjective and varies from person to person. To minimize your discomfort in any situation our Board Certified OB/GYNs will offer you local cervical anesthetic “numbing” blocks or “twilight/light” sedation. Regardless of which type of anesthesia was initially chosen, the patient may request more medication anytime she feels that her discomfort is excessive. With these options, patients usually find the procedure to be completely painless. Many clinics and centers don’t have the expertise to provide these anesthetic pain control methods and patients often complain of significant discomfort and cramping.

The Abortion Pill / RU-486 / Mifeprex /Mifepristone

New York OB/GYN Associates™ is a pioneer in being one of the first private offices in America to administer the Abortion Pill/RU-486 since it became FDA approved. The Abortion Pill/ RU-486  works by stopping pregnancy hormones from reaching the uterus, which results in a woman having a “heavier period”. Many women choose the Abortion Pill/RU-486 as a method of terminating their pregnancy as it has advantages over other methods. Unlike any other method, the Abortion Pill/RU-486 can be taken in the privacy of your own home, at your discretion. You also have the option of taking the first pill at the New York OB/GYN Associates™ private medical office in the presence of your Board Certified OB/GYN. The decision as to when and where you take the pill is entirely up to you. The second set of pills is then taken 48 hours after the first pill. The second set of pills propels a woman’s body to shed the uterine lining and expel the pregnancy. At this point you will feel cramping for several hours, the cramping is similar to cramping felt during a heavy period. We will prescribe pain medication and anti-nausea medication to use as needed to ease your discomfort. The next step is to schedule a follow up appointment at our office to confirm that the pill was successful, this is done by having a confirmatory sonogram administered.

Surgical Abortion Dilation and Curettage (D&C) and Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)

Surgical abortions with Dilation and Curettage (D&C) and Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) are invasive methods to terminate an early pregnancy. When undergoing these surgical abortion methods the procedure takes place in an operating room and you must spend time in a recovery room to heal. It typically takes a few days to resume normal activities and to feel normal again. These surgical procedures involve scraping, scarring, loud electrical suction, and heavy sedation. Surgical abortions are typically used to end pregnancy in an abortion clinic, center or a hospital. New York OB/GYN Associates™ DOES NOT perform these invasive surgical abortion methods. At New York OB/GYN Associates™ we specialize in early abortions using the Aspiration Procedure and the Abortion Pill/RU-486.

The World Health Organization (WHO) endorses New York OB/GYN Associates™ methods of the Aspiration Procedure and the Abortion Pill/RU-486 as the safest abortion methods to terminate an early pregnancy. These non-surgical procedures do not cause damage to the uterine wall and they do not involve scrapping or scarring.

According to The World Health Organization’s technical guidelines on safe abortion: Aspiration and medical abortion are preferred methods for abortion in the first trimester. Both these methods are safe, effective, and suitable for the primary level of care and should be available at levels of care with greater capacity and in many private clinical settings.

IPAS, an international organization dedicated to safe abortion care adds: Regrettably, many health facilities still use the sharp curettage or dilation and curettage (D&C) method. The WHO guidelines state that because women’s risk of complications is substantially higher with sharp curettage than with vacuum aspiration or medication abortion, this method should be used only when vacuum aspiration and medication abortion are unavailable.
