What does this method involve? A soft skinny flexible plastic tube is inserted into the natural opening of a woman’s cervix. A handheld manual aspirator is used to create a vacuum suction and the pregnancy tissue is then gently removed from the uterus One pill is taken in the doctors office or in the privacy of your own home. You then take a second set of pills that propels your body to have your period which expels the pregnancy tissue. A metal instrument is used to widen the opening of the cervix. Then a cannula is inserted. A tube connects an electrical vacuum machine to the cannula. Suctioning is applied. The uterus is scraped with a sharp instrument.
How effective is this method? Greater than 99% 98-99% 99%
How long does this method take? Less than 5 minutes It takes 48 hours from the first pill to terminate pregnancy. 10-15 minutes. This includes administering anesthesia
How long is recovery time? Instantaneous 2-3 hours. Once the cramping stops you usually feel normal Hours to days
Is there pain and discomfort post procedure? There is minimal discomfort similar to period cramps. You may return to normal activity directly after the procedure is done. However you cannot insert anything into the vagina for 24 hours. The bleeding involved is usually heavier than a period for the first couple of hours. Then the bleeding becomes more like a period. Spotting which can last for two weeks. When taking the pill most women feel 1-2 hours of cramping and heavy bleeding Discomfort felt after surgery can last for hours or several days. You cannot insert anything into the vagina for 2-6 weeks
Complications Minor complications that are usually able to be treated in a doctor’s office Minor complications can usually be treated in a doctors office. On extreme rare occasion major complications have involved hospitalization after surgical abortions.
